Welcome to my "Qwest vs. Comcast" page.

The reason I put this page together was to cut through the crap of who has greater bandwidth; Comcast cable vs. Qwest DSL. Below I show speed test results taken on December 22, 2005 between the times of 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM, using the same test servers and the same LAN side equipment. Half the tests were done via Comcast cable service (RCA cable modem - model DCM245R), the other half were done via Qwest DSL (ActionTec DSL modem - model GT701-WG). Both modems are configured with the same gateway address, so no changes were made to my system other than changing the router protocol and then moving the ethernet cable from one modem to the other.

LAN side hardware used:

Computer: 1.2 Ghz Pentium 4 processor with 1 gigabyte of RAM and Windows 2000 Operating System.

Router: Linksys BEFSR11 with latest Firmware update (v1.46.02, Aug 03 2004)

Recap of routers used:

For Qwest DSL: ActionTec GT701-WG (in "Transparent Bridge" mode)

For Comcast cable: RCA DCM245R

Conclusion:

As you can see, download bandwidth is consistantly greater using Comcast, whereas upload bandwidth is consistantly greater using Qwest DSL. Since I host my own website (this website), upload bandwidth is important to me. The smaller the upload bandwidth, the longer you, the user, has to wait for files to download to your computer. However since the difference in upload bandwidth is marginal across the two services, I pretty much go with the cheapest provider. As of this writing, Comcast has the best deal.
