Multiple SCSI Device Setups ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are receiving an error indicating that the controller is not responding and you have more than one device on your SCSI chain, make sure the Enable Disconnection option in your SCSI controller's BIOS setup is set to Yes (On). If this option is off, the Windows miniport driver causes a SCSI bus reset when your hard drive or CD-ROM is idle for more than 10 seconds. The reset causes the backup device's current operation to abort. To set the Enable Disconnect option: 1. Enter your SCSI controller's BIOS. For example, press and hold the CRTL-A keys (for Adaptec controllers) during the computer's boot sequence. 2. Switch ENABLE DISCONNECTION to YES (ON). Sometimes this option displays as Disconnect/Reconnect. Refer to your hardware manual for more information on this option. 2. Travan Drive Detection ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Travan drives are detected and appear in the program as the drive type they are based on. For example, a Tr-3 is presented as a QIC-3020, a Tr-2 is presented as a QIC-3010, and a Tr-1 is presented as a QIC-80. 3. Mouse Drivers Interfering with Right-click Functionality ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some mouse drivers, for example MS Intellipoint drivers, interfere with right-click functionality. If a context menu does not appear when you right-click a file, try holding the Shift key and pressing F10 or, try double-right clicking on a file to bring up the context menu. If the context menu still does not appear, you may want to uninstall the mouse software. 4. Error Occurring with a PPT Device ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are using a PPT device and you receive an error indicating a corrupt file set directory, try changing the port delay settings for your PPT device. To change the port delay settings: 1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties. 2. Click the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window. 3. Select your PPT device, then click Properties. 4. Click the Settings tab, change the Port delay entry in increments of 10 with a maximum setting of 30. After each change in setting, close and then reopen your backup software to see if the problem has been resolved. For example, change the Port delay to 10, then click OK. Next, close and then reopen your backup software to see if the problem is resolved. If the problem persists, try changing the Port delay to 20. 5. Power Management Conflicts ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Computer systems having power management features may conflict with the backup program. If the computer system activates its power saving mode during a backup or any other tape operation, any of the following symptoms may occur: 1. The video screen may turn black and you won't be able to return the system to normal operation. 2. The tape drive may continually run or "shoeshine". 3. The keyboard may be active, but the monitor will not respond. If you experience any of these problems, reboot the system, turn all power management features OFF (use AC power with laptops), and start the tape operation again. 6. SCSI Controller ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you experience sluggish performance with your SCSI controller, contact the hardware manufacturer for the latest mini-port driver. Please make sure you have the most recent versions of these drivers installed. 7. Delay After Media Format, Media Initialize, or Canceled Backup ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A delay of a few seconds to several minutes may result after canceling a format or initialize operation. Delays may also occur after you cancel a backup job. Hard disk activity will occur while information is removed from the catalog. Longer delays occur if the medium contains a large number of files. 8. Tape Capacity ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Remaining tape capacity is not indicated for all tape drives. This function is hardware dependent. 9. Known Incompatibilities ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The following incompatibilities exist between HP Colorado Backup II and other programs: 1. Installing HP Colorado Backup II onto a disk drive that has been compressed with Stacker95 may cause the system to lock up. The program should not be installed on hard drives using this compression. 10. Possible Problems with IDE Chipsets ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On some PC's, the Windows operating system software is unable to properly recognize and configure the IDE chipset, which controls the IDE hard disk, CD-ROM, and IDE tape drive. Windows will force all accesses to IDE devices to occur sequentially, sometimes referred to as serialized access. Serialized access implies each IDE operation must complete before the next access can begin. Normally the delays caused by sequential operation are not apparent to the customer because hard drive and CD-ROM accesses complete quickly. However, when using an IDE tape backup device, certain tape operations, such as retension, will require longer periods of time to complete and will cause a noticeable delay in accessing other IDE devices while the tape operation completes. The backup software appears to be hung, but it's not. The system is just waiting for the IDE tape operation to complete. One way to reduce the delays when using an IDE tape backup device is to use a third party IDE controller card. 11. Tape Is Formatted, But Not Readable Error Message ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For optimal performance during backup and restore, close down all other applications running in the background (TSR's). This includes virus checkers, screen savers, and shell programs. Errors associated with background applications include tape not readable, general page faults, and slow performance. 12. Restores Requiring Multiple Media ------------------------------------------------------------------------ After selecting files to restore and clicking Start, the Media Required box will appear, but may not display all the media required to complete a restore for a multiple media backup job. For backup jobs requiring more than one medium, it is recommended that you know the sequence in which the media were filled. To ensure a complete restore, insert the media in sequence until all of the requested files have been restored. 13. Scheduler Log File ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Scheduler log file records the status of a scheduled backup job. If it reports exceptions to a successful job completion, such as warnings (2), skipped files (3), or errors (101), the details can be found in the HP Colorado Backup II log file. 14. Software Incompatible with HP Colorado Backup II ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LAPTOP.SYS is a file that is provided on some portable computers. HP Colorado Backup II cannot be installed on laptops that have LAPTOP.SYS installed, because it may cause Windows NT to fail during system startup. For more information on this issue, please contact your system manufacturer. This problem does not occur on Windows 95/98 systems. 15. File Size Limit for Backup or Restore ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HP Colorado Backup II can not backup or restore a single file that exceeds 4GB. 16. Problem Detecting Multiple PPT Connected Devices ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HP Colorado Backup II does not support machines containing multiple PPT devices. If you have more than one PPT device connected to your system, only one device will be detected by HP Colorado Backup II. 17. IRQ Settings on Adaptec AHA-1510 SCSI Controller ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If your system contains an Adaptec AHA-1510 SCSI Controller, HP Colorado Backup II may encounter problems recognizing your backup device while running Disaster Recovery. The DOS ASPI driver is set to find the controller only if the IRQ is still set to the factory setting (11). If your adapter is set to any other IRQ (9, 10, or 12), you must set the IRQ when the driver is installed using a command line switch in the CONFIG.SYS file on your startup diskettes. device=aspi2dos.sys /qx where 'x' is the IRQ the jumper is set to. 18. Restoring NTFS Backup Sets to FAT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ When restoring a backup set created on NTFS to a FAT volume, some compare errors may be reported. This is normal as NTFS contains security stream information, which FAT does not support. The data will be restored correctly to your FAT volume without the security stream information. 19. Disaster Recovery Configuration ------------------------------------------------------------------------ When preparing to run the Disaster Recovery process after a system failure, please ensure that your drive configuration is the same as the configuration in use when the backup was created. If the configuration is different, HP Colorado Backup II may not be able to correctly restore all of your data. 20. Scheduling Backup Jobs in Windows 2000 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ When scheduling a backup job, HP Colorado Backup II uses only your Windows username and password, not your network information. Therefore, please enter your Windows username and password in the field: "Run job as if were started by." 21. Sparse Files ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A significant difference between the estimated size and the actual byte count may occur if your operating system is set to use sparse files. The reported difference will have no effect on the integrity of your data. 22. HP Colorado Backup II and Active Desktop Applications ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HP Colorado Backup II may report file miscompares of your Active Desktop applications if they are enabled during a backup. This is normal behavior as these applications are dynamically updated and therefore will not match archived copies.
